A Message from the Chairman

At FPL Group, we do more than talk about sustainability. We embody it.

In just over a decade, we’ve committed more than $10 billion to renewable energy, and today, we’re the leading renewable energy company in North America. In fact, if every utility were as clean as we are, carbon dioxide emissions from the electric power sector would be reduced by 49 percent and total U.S. carbon emissions would be reduced by 20 percent – the equivalent of removing 209 million cars, or roughly 80 percent of all vehicles, from U.S. roadways.

FPL Group’s clean-energy leadership has been rewarded with remarkable financial success. Last year, in the most challenging economy in decades, we delivered the best financial performance in the history of FPL Group. And as measured by total shareholder return, FPL Group again outperformed the S&P Utility Index and the S&P 500 Index, just as we have for six of the last seven years. In short, by being clean, we think we’ve found the key to economic sustainability as well.

Just as our strong environmental performance has contributed to outstanding financial success, that financial success has enabled us to help maintain sustainable communities and a healthy and productive workforce. For example, we're supporting United Way and helping our low-income customers pay their electric bills. We're sponsoring scholarships and other education programs and investing in comprehensive wellness programs for our employees.

At FPL Group, we see the various elements of sustainability as a seamless whole. It's the way we've been operating for decades, and we don’t know how to do business any other way.
