Among the Lowest Emitters
-
FPL Group has one of the lowest emission rates of greenhouse gases in the electric power sector. Approximately 50 percent of the company’s approximately 33,000-megawatt generating capacity is fueled by natural gas, 15 percent by nuclear, and 10 percent by wind.
-
If all electric utilities in America were operating at a CO2 emission rate comparable to FPL Group’s, the nation would be able to meet Kyoto Protocol today.
-
As part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Leaders program, FPL Group is committed to achieving an 18 percent reduction in emissions rates of greenhouse gases by 2008 based on a 2001 baseline.
-
FPL Group is the largest U.S. power company to have joined World Wildlife Fund’s Powerswitch! Pioneers Program. When joining the program, FPL Group agreed to continue its successful demand reduction programs and achieve a 15 percent improvement in electricity generation efficiency by 2020. Today, the company expects to exceed that goal by achieving an estimated 25 percent efficiency improvement, the equivalent of achieving a 19 million ton per year CO2 reduction by 2020.
