Climate Change - We Support a Carbon Fee
We support a market-based, economy-wide program that directly places a price on carbon emissions and believe it will have the best prospect of achieving sensible environmental goals and maintaining economic growth. Imposing a price or fee on CO2 emissions that predictably, steadily and gradually escalates over time offers substantial practical advantages. A carbon fee will:
- Support long-term capital deployment
- Avoid immediate, significant distortions in the economy
- Be more efficient and fair to administer than a cap and trade program
- Support increased R&D funding to accelerate development of new CO2 abatement and control technologies
- Provide transitional assistance to economically disadvantaged consumers
- Preserve the competitive position of U.S.-based companies
With the assistance of The Brattle Group, an independent economic consultant, we have thoroughly analyzed these issues and have published a report on our conclusions. We encourage you to read our report: “U.S. Climate Policy: Pricing Carbon, Preserving the Environment, Protecting the Economy.” A more thorough discussion of the methods used in the analysis and the technical details of these issues can be found in an accompanying technical paper by The Brattle Group.
