Climate Change is a Reality and We Must Take Action Now

The threat of major, long-term environmental and economic damage from climate change is real. Although many uncertainties remain, there is sufficient evidence today to warrant taking action to slow and eventually reverse the growth in greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, there will be a cost to taking action. It is critical that the right policies be put in place - policies that will be effective in reducing emissions without imposing unacceptable costs or needlessly shocking the global economy - to address this long term issue. Bad policy can be just as damaging as no policy at all.

FPL Group’s Call to Action

FPL Group strongly encourages the U.S. Congress to take immediate steps to set the United States on a path to lower CO2 emissions rather than continue the “business as usual” approach. As a clean energy company, FPL Group has reduced its emissions rates significantly over the past years through numerous voluntary efforts. Yet, we firmly believe that voluntary programs will not be sufficient to realize meaningful and necessary reductions economy- and world-wide.

We believe the most effective greenhouse gas policy will price carbon throughout the economy and do so in a predictable fashion. By internalizing the cost of carbon into the overall cost of all goods and services throughout the economy, the proper incentives and economic signals to reduce emissions will be created, without also introducing unnecessary economic burdens or distortions.
