A Leader in the Fastest Growing Renewable Power Source: Wind Power
Wind is the nation’s fastest-growing renewable
source of power, and one of FPL Energy’s competitive
advantages is in wind energy development, construction
and operation. In 2006, FPL Energy added more than 800
megawatts to its wind portfolio, and expects significant growth in future years as well.
With 49 wind energy facilities currently in operation in 15 states, FPL Energy generates more than 4,000 net megawatts of wind energy, or enough power to provide electricity to well over 1 million homes. This makes FPL Energy the U.S. market leader in wind energy.
FPL Energy offers advantages that few others in the wind industry have: financial strength; a proven ability to deliver; world-class expertise in developing, constructing and operating wind facilities; and a strong community focus.

Power from the Sun and Water
FPL Energy, the largest generator of solar energy in the country, operates an unprecedented 310 megawatts of solar power, with ownership of approximately 150 megawatts. Through operations at the Solar Energy Generating Systems (SEGS) in California’s Mojave Desert, the company is using state-of-the-art technology to collect solar power and convert it into useful energy.
In addition to its wind and solar power generation facilities, FPL Energy also produces 361 megawatts of electricity at more than 25 hydroelectric power plants in Maine.
Harnessing Nuclear Power
In 2006, FPL Energy further diversified its portfolio by expanding its nuclear fleet, acquiring a 70-percent interest in the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Iowa. In 2007, the company acquired the Point Beach nuclear power plant in Wisconsin. FPL Energy also holds the majority interest in, and is the operator of, Seabrook Station in New Hampshire.
Operating in Harmony with the Environment
FPL Energy promotes power generation through the use of clean fuels and renewable resources.
-
In 2006, FPL Energy’s wind generation offset nearly 6.4 million tons of carbon dioxide, more than 14,000 tons of sulfur dioxide and more than 9,000 tons of nitrogen oxide that would otherwise have been released into the environment.
-
The company incorporates environmental protection and stewardship into the design, construction, operation and maintenance of all its facilities.
-
Seabrook Station uses only one-tenth of its 900-acre property for power production purposes.
The remaining property is left in its natural habitat and serves as a wildlife preserve, providing homes to myriad plant and wildlife species.
